Conscious Oral Sedation
An Elevated, Complimentary Comfort Experience
Exceptional dentistry should never come with unnecessary stress. For patients who desire a deeply relaxed and effortless experience, our practice offers conscious oral sedation at no additional cost — a level of comfort many offices reserve as an upgrade
This service reflects our philosophy: uncompromising care, thoughtful detail, and patient comfort at every step.
Who is Sedation Dentistry For?
We offer FREE sedation for anybody who has dental anxiety, any dental need, or hasn’t been to the dentist in a long time.
A Refined Approach to Relaxation
Conscious oral sedation utilizes carefully selected benzodiazepine medications (such as Triazolam, Midazolam, and similar agents) to create a state of profound relaxation while maintaining complete safety and awareness.
Patients commonly experience:
- Deep physical and mental calm
- A dream-like, restful state — many fall asleep
- Little to no memory of the visit
- A sense of ease without loss of consciousness
Unlike IV sedation, oral conscious sedation does not cause patients to act out of character. Even when memory is limited, patients remain themselves — simply more relaxed, unbothered, and comfortable.

The Difference Is in the Details
Most dental practices require patients to obtain sedation medication in advance and self-administer it.
We believe comfort deserves a higher standard.
Sedation is administered and managed exclusively in our office, allowing our clinical team to:
- Carefully guide patients into a deeper, more effective level of relaxation
- Monitor response in real time
- Adjust medication safely and precisely if needed
Patients arrive one to two hours prior to treatment, allowing the medication to reach its full effect under professional supervision. Throughout this time — and for the duration of the appointment — vital signs are continuously monitored, ensuring both comfort and safety.
What to Expect During an Oral Sedation Appointment.
A Seamless, Monitored Experience
From arrival to departure, patients are cared for attentively and discreetly. The experience is calm, unhurried, and designed to feel effortless — allowing you to simply relax while we handle the rest.
This approach is especially well-suited for:
- Patients with dental anxiety or past traumatic experiences
- Lengthy or complex procedures
- Those who value comfort and peace of mind

Aftercare & Transportation
Because oral sedation temporarily affects coordination and memory:
- A responsible adult escort is required for pick-up
- Patients should plan to return home and rest for the remainder of the day
- Work, errands, and decision-making should be postponed
Every individual responds uniquely, and we encourage patients to prioritize rest and recovery.
Preparing for Your Appointment
To ensure the safest and most effective experience, we ask patients to follow these guidelines carefully:
Three days prior
- Avoid grapefruit juice
- Avoid St. John’s Wort
Before and after your visit
- No alcohol
The night before treatment
- No eating or drinking after midnight
Day of treatment
- Do not plan to return to work
- Avoid important decisions
- Arrange for a guardian to accompany you home
Dentistry Designed Around You
Our complimentary conscious oral sedation reflects our commitment to delivering dentistry that feels as refined and thoughtful as the results themselves. For many patients, it transforms dental care into a calm, almost forgotten experience — one where comfort is never compromised.
Our team is happy to discuss whether conscious oral sedation is right for you and guide you through every step.

What Causes the Fear of the Dentist?

Visiting the dentist to have your smile cleaned removes plaque and tartar, which can’t be done at home. Avoiding the dentist can lead to more cavities and infections or more severe oral health issues.
That is why James Martin, DMD, works with patients to ensure a comfortable experience that alleviates dental fear and allows us to treat your oral health. Dr. Martin is thorough and kind, helping you feel at ease. Our oral or IV sedation can help your body relax and prevent gag reflexes or anxiety responses.

Will it Help With Dental Anxiety?
Our options are intended to assist those who have dental anxiety. Valium or our oral sedative is the most effective treatment for anxiety or even panic attacks associated with dental visits.
Developing a good relationship with your dentist is part of minimizing dental anxiety as well. Dr. Martin spends time with each patient during their consultation and visits getting to know them and helping them feel comfortable in our office. We also work with each patient so that they understand how the treatment will work and feel.
Versatile Options
We offer three different options, which we will use based on your needs:
- Valium
- Oral Sedation
- IV Sedation
We will consult with you during our two-hour consultation to decide which option will help you have the best experience possible during your treatments. Our variety of solutions means we have something for every patient.
A Dentist Who Understands
Dr. Martin understands dental anxiety and provides a relaxing and friendly environment. His consultations are unlike any other, focused on helping you feel comfortable about your treatments and know what to expect.
Our office also makes sedation convenient for all patients by offering complimentary oral sedation easily picked up at a pharmacy before your appointment.
Our Sedation Options
Our dental sedation options provide solutions for everyone. Each of the following options might appeal to patients with different needs and levels of anxiety:
- Valium: As part of our pre-medication options, Valium is available for patients requiring a calming aid before their dental treatment. This option is ideal for those seeking mild to moderate relaxation to alleviate dental anxiety.
- Oral Sedation (complimentary): Before your appointment, we’ll provide a prescription for oral sedation. It is important to follow the provided instructions on timing before your visit. Given the lasting calming effects, you will need to arrange transportation to and from your appointment, ensuring a hassle-free and deeply relaxed experience.
- IV Sedation: For specific situations requiring deeper relaxation, we offer IV sedation. This method is considered case-by-case, focusing on safety and patient comfort. Our team will discuss this option with you in detail to ensure it aligns with your needs and treatment plan.
Regardless of what sedation option you choose, you can rest assured knowing that your dental visit will be comfortable and anxiety-free. We will work with you to determine what sedation option is right for you so you know beforehand what to expect. We want our patients to feel comfortable before, during, and after treatment.

The FAQs of Sedative Dentistry
We will take the time to educate you regarding your options and any risks associated with sedation during your consultation.
Is Sedative Dentistry Safe for Children and Elderly Patients?
Yes, sedative dentistry is generally safe for both children and elderly patients. Dentists carefully consider the patient’s age, weight, and medical history to select the appropriate sedative and dosage. Safety measures are taken to monitor the patient’s vital signs throughout the procedure.
We will ask about your health history before we offer sedation dentistry, and during our consultation. It’s important to discuss any specific health concerns with Dr. Martin to ensure that all goes smoothly.
How Long Does It Take for Sedation to Wear off after a Dental Procedure?
Oral sedation should be taken shortly before your appointment. It will wear off a couple of hours after your appointment. Valium is similar but may last slightly longer. IV sedation effects can last the entire day.
For any kind of sedation dentistry, it is best to arrange rides to and from our office and take at least a partial day off from work.
How Should I Prepare for a Dental Appointment with Sedation?
We will discuss how to prepare for oral sedation and IV sedation during your consultation, as well as send you written instructions. Preparation for sedative dentistry involves several steps:
- Avoid eating or drinking for at least six hours before the appointment if you’re having oral or IV sedation
- Wear comfortable clothing and take the time to relax before your appointment
- Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to the office and back home
- Inform the dental team of any medications or health conditions
- Follow any other specific instructions provided by Dr. Martin and the hygienists to ensure a smooth procedure
