Missing Teeth | Much More Than a Cosmetic Issue
If you have missing teeth or a severely damaged smile, getting treatment is not just about repairing the way your smile appears. Missing teeth cause oral health issues and can damage your confidence.

Travis was embarrassed by his smile. His treatment included a mixture of dental implants and crowns.
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Dental implants are permanent fixtures that are placed in your jawbone. They have a small ball on the top, called an abutment. We attach a crown, called a restoration, on that abutment. The crown is perfectly fitted to your smile so you will have a permanent and comfortable solution!
We utilize every tool we have to give you a satisfactory smile. Each type of implant is used in different sections of the mouth and for different concerns. If you need more than one tooth replaced, we will mix and match the kinds of implants to create a perfect smile for you.

LIVING WITH MISSING TEETH
Missing teeth can make you feel self-conscious about how you look and can cause serious pain and toothaches. Missing teeth can affect the health of your entire body. We want you to have a high quality of life, free of embarrassment or sickness, so we focus on restorative dentistry including dental implants.
Dental implants are one of the best ways to restore your oral health because they stabilize your teeth and jawbone.
BONE LOSS
Jaw bone density can decrease over time in a specific area of the jaw if there is not a tooth root attached. This can cause several issues like jaw aches or even widespread tooth loss.
Implants are an essential part of keeping your jaw healthy after tooth loss. Your jawbone will grow around the implant, helping the bone remain strong.
During our initial consultation, we will be sure to evaluate the health of your jawbone. If you are suffering from a loss in jaw bone density, we have bone grafting and implant options to restore your teeth and jaw.
CREATING A SECURE SMILE
Implants work naturally with your body to create a secure place for restorations. Because implants are so secure and permanent, they replicate natural teeth very closely. You will be able to eat and chew regularly after receiving your restorations.
Our crown restorations look just like natural teeth. They are tooth-colored and stain-resistant. As long as you care for your restorations properly, they can last a lifetime!

OUR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
Beyond the different kinds of implants we offer, we also utilize advanced technology that makes your implant experience more comfortable. One special example is how we do our surgeries. We utilize a robotic arm to make incisions as small as possible, and with as much precision as possible.
We will have all the information necessary to help you achieve a healthy smile with short recovery times. We use many types of imaging technology to be as precise as possible:
- CBCT Scanner
- InstRrisa Scanner
- Intraoral Scanner
We use Exocad software to visualize your scans and digitally design your perfect smile.
DENTAL IMPLANT RESTORATIONS
We have several different options for restoring your smile. When we give you our recommendations, we take into consideration your current and future oral health, your concerns, and your budget. We want our patients to be empowered in their decisions.
There are three kinds of tooth replacement options using implants:
- Crowns | Implant-supported crowns replace a single tooth.
- Bridges | Bridges replace one or more damaged or missing teeth.
- Dentures | Dentures supported by implants are a more secure option for multiple missing teeth.
To learn more about each option, get a 2-hour consultation with Dr. James Martin today!
Using Implants for Full Mouth Restoration
If your entire mouth has been suffering from dental trauma or poor oral health, we have care right here, at James Martin, DMD, in Lafayette, Colorado. We will even take on patients that other doctors may have turned away and give them the smile of their dreams.
Implants are one of the best ways to rehabilitate an entire smile that needs repair. This process can take multiple visits but will result in a permanent smile without dentures.
DENTAL IMPLANT CANDIDATES
If you are missing teeth, we believe you can be helped with our restorative dentistry. If you are missing one tooth or all of your teeth, we have solutions for you. Every patient who visits us deserves a smile that looks whole and that they are satisfied with.
You may not immediately qualify for implants if you are suffering from intense bone density loss. If that is the case, have solutions for that first. We will treat your smile wholistically, ensuring that implants and other restorations will work for you!

Our Patients’ Experiences with Dr. Martin
“Dr Martin and the whole staff are amazing! I’ve been seeing Dr Martin for nearly a year now getting a lot of long overdue work done, and am currently nearing the end of the process of getting a couple implants. His work is amazing and top of the line! I have major anxiety in general, but excessive health (dental) anxiety and everyone here has been very supportive and understanding when I had many questions or just needed reassurance.“

OUR DENTAL IMPLANT PROCESS
1. PREPARING FOR THE IMPLANT
We offer a thorough consultation to make sure we know you and your teeth very well before we decide on a treatment plan. We are in your corner, helping you make informed decisions about your dental health care.
2. SEDATION OPTIONS
We offer sedation dentistry for dental implants. While dental implants are a great way to restore your missing teeth permanently, the process of having an implant placed can be quite intimidating since it involves oral surgery. We offer oral conscious sedation for patients who are undergoing implant placement surgery to keep your appointment as comfortable as possible. Combined with our powerful numbing agents and minimally-invasive approach to implant dentistry, this sedation option will give you an enjoyable implant placement process. Your comfort is our priority.
3. BONE GRAFT
During your consultation, we will evaluate your jawbone. If your jawbone is not suffering from deterioration, we can move forward with implants soon! If you have lost bone density, we may suggest bone grafts before moving forward with implants.
A bone graft will use either synthetic bone or bone from another place in your body to help your jawbone remain strong. Loss of jawbone density causes the bone to become brittle, causing pain or even more tooth loss. It is a surgery performed by our oral surgeon. Once you have recovered from your bone graft surgery, we can move forward with implants!
4. IMPLANT PLACEMENT
Getting implants placed can sound daunting. But here at James Martin, DMD, we have solutions for those with even the worst dental fear. Our comfort menu is free, and has several different options based on your needs.
Implant placement surgery is typically done with local anesthesia. Our guided implant surgery technique means that we leave nothing up to chance. We will carefully insert the implant through your gums and into the correct spot in your jawbone. Your gums and jawbone will heal around the implant, making it permanent. Discomfort or pain after the procedure can be mitigated by OTC pain relievers.
5. ABUTMENT PLACEMENT
After the implant is secured, we’ll place an abutment on the implant. The abutment has a small metal ball that sits above your gums and is what the restorative crown connects to. Abutments keep your crown working like a regular tooth!
6. CROWN MILLING
James Martin, DMD, has an in-house milling lab. We will make your crowns while your implant is healing. You can come into our office once you are healed and immediately get your crowns, no waiting for the lab!
We use our Instarisa scanner and other advanced computer programs to create crowns that fit you perfectly. Our crowns are also the perfect tooth color. The crowns will sit comfortably in your mouth, specially crafted for your smile.
7. CROWN PLACEMENT
We are always excited about crown placement days at our office. Your custom crowns will be placed on your abutments, creating a permanent tooth that works just like a natural tooth. Your smile will be restored.
After a short period of healing and adjustment, you will have regular function of your smile. Your eating and speaking will drastically improve after getting your missing teeth replaced with our custom crowns. At James Martin, DMD, we will celebrate your new smile with you!
8. HEALING
Healing typically takes a couple of weeks. If you need multiple implants we will often place a couple at a time with space for healing in between each round.
Guided Implant Surgery
Dr. Martin will use digital workflows to create an exact placement for your implant. The designated placement in your jaw is based on cosmetics, your jawbone, and the perfect mathematical placement for your new implants.
Once we have that position decided Dr. Martin will create a 3-D outline for a metal plate that will help him place the implant perfectly. The plate will be created in a lab and then sent back to him for your implant placement surgery.
VERSATILE TOOTH-REPLACEMENT OPTIONS
Implants can do so much more than replace a single missing tooth. We use them for many other solutions, depending on your needs. Each approach is customized to your concerns and smile.
We offer 3 different kinds of implants:
- Endosteal Implants
- Pterygoid Implants
- Zygomatic Implants
ENDOSTEAL IMPLANTS
Endosteal implants are the most widely recognized and utilized form of dental implantation. These implants are surgically placed directly into the jawbone, serving as a robust and stable foundation for replacement teeth. Made from biocompatible titanium, they are designed to mimic the root of a natural tooth, promoting bone growth and preventing bone loss.
Endosteal implants offer a durable, long-term solution for restoring your smile, improving oral health, and enhancing the functionality of your teeth.
PTERYGOID IMPLANTS
For patients with insufficient bone in the posterior upper jaw, James Martin, DMD, offers an innovative solution: pterygoid implants. These specialized implants bypass the need for bone grafting by anchoring directly into the pterygoid plate, allowing for immediate function and aesthetic restoration.
Pterygoid implants provide a secure base for prosthetic teeth, making them an ideal choice for those who seek a less invasive alternative to traditional sinus lift surgeries. Embrace the confidence of a full smile with our expertly placed pterygoid implants.
ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS
At James Martin, DMD, we address severe upper jaw bone loss with zygomatic implants, a revolutionary approach for patients who are not candidates for conventional dental implants. These long implants are anchored into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone), offering a graft-less option for extensive restoration.
Zygomatic implants enable immediate restoration, reducing treatment time and offering a lifeline for those with significant bone deterioration.
Addressing Your Implant Questions
How Much Will Dental Implants Cost?
Our dental cleanings are comfortable experiences with little to no pain. Our Airflow dental cleaning technology should make them even more comfortable than regular cleanings. Each hygienist in our office is very careful to make this a comfortable experience.
Are Dental Implants Painful?
Implants can be painful after the surgery, but we offer pain mitigation during and after the procedure. We offer oral conscious sedation to our patients who are getting dental implants. This medication makes the implant placement process more comfortable. You’ll be totally relaxed.
Any lingering, post-treatment discomfort should disappear after a couple of days.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Implants should last a lifetime if treated properly. Brushing carefully, avoiding hard foods like nuts, and seeing your dentist regularly will keep them functional and healthy. If damage does occur, we can replace restorations on implants.
How do I Prepare for Dental Implants?
The best way to prepare for implant placement is to meet with Dr. James Martin for our unique new-patient consultation. We will answer your questions and give you all the information you need to know before you get your implants.
Make sure that you maintain good oral hygiene while you wait for your appointments. Brush twice a day; use floss and mouthwash once a day. Avoid sugary foods and sodas that may contribute to tooth decay.
Is There Any Additional Care After the Implants Are Installed?
Once you have had your implants installed, you should eat soft foods for around 24 hours afterward. Icing the area may reduce pain and swelling. Continue to brush your teeth, but be extra gentle around the area where the implant was placed.
We will always send you home with clear care instructions, ensuring that you have a good implant experience with little discomfort.
What are the Causes of Implant Failure
Implant failure is not very common, especially because we are thorough about evaluations beforehand. Occasionally the body thinks the implants are dangerous and rejects them. This will be treated immediately, and depending on the case we can attempt placing an implant again.
Failure can also happen if the jaw bone is not sturdy enough. We avoid this outcome by taking no-touch X-rays and scans to understand your bone density before we decide on an implant.
