Preventative Dentistry in Lafayette, Colorado
Preventative care is the first line of dentistry. Routine cleanings and exams can prevent:
- Gum Disease
- Cavities
- Bad Breath
- Oral Infections
- Tooth Decay
We support prevention through detail-oriented dental cleanings, in-depth diagnosis, quick treatment of dental issues, and by offering effective dental products for the whole family.
We will also do exams that evaluate you for oral cancer and periodontal disease, which means not only does our practice prevent damage to your smile, but we will catch small issues before they turn into big ones.
BENEFITS OF PREVENTATIVE CARE
If you ignore preventative care advice, you may have more severe oral health issues that you must deal with later, ones that severely impact your smile and quality of life. Things like small cavities or gingivitis can cause tooth loss if they are left to develop.
Exams can catch those concerns, and we offer treatments that are efficient and quick to treat developing dental concerns. Having routine exams also allows us to catch issues like oral cancer or tooth decay early. Early detection can be life-saving in certain cases! That is why we recommend visiting James Martin, DMD, every 6 months for a routine exam and cleaning.
PREVENTATIVE CARE BEYOND THE DENTIST CHAIR
Our team is here to provide education and products that support our patients beyond our chair.
We encourage each patient to:
- Brush with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day
- Floss once a day and optionally use a water pick
- Avoid high amounts of sugary foods and sodas
- Use a mouthwash once a day
Oral care is essential to a high quality of life, and makes those dentist visits easier!
We partner with Carifree CTX for preventative care, allowing us to give you specific treatment plans and recommendations for your dental health.
Our Patients’ Experiences with Dr. Martin
“I recently had some horrible fillings done at another office. I reached out to James Martin DMD, and they were able to get me in within days for a consultation. After my consultation they had an opening that day to get some of my fillings replaced. All the staff I worked with were welcoming, friendly, and professional. They created an amazing environment that made me feel safe and confident in the care I was receiving. Also, Dr. Martin is an amazing dentist who I can’t recommend enough. If you’re looking for reliable dental care, look no further!“

WHAT DO OUR DENTAL EXAMS INCLUDE?
Our exams are gentle and focused on ensuring that your smile is in top health. We do our exams based on patient needs, not what insurance recommends. If you have a concern about your smile or notice a change in your mouth, contact us immediately to get an exam, even if you saw us recently!
In our exams, we evaluate:
- Potential oral cancer risks such as new bumps
- Every tooth for cavities or damage
- Your gums and periodontal health
- Your bite and jaw for misalignment or deterioration
Our exams are above and beyond typical dental exams. We will take time with each patient. If you have dental concerns or have been suffering from toothaches or jaw pain, we will take the time to evaluate you and suggest the next steps.
COMPLIMENTARY X-RAYS
We do not want insurance coverage or high costs to prevent us from accurately treating and diagnosing our patients, which is why our X-rays are complimentary. We offer non-invasive X-rays and scans that allow us to see the details of your oral health.
X-rays, scans, and high-res pictures allow us to catch concerns that the naked eye cannot see, allowing us to cover a wide depth and breadth of patient care.
A SKILLED DENTIST AND TEAM
When you come in for an exam, one of our highly-trained dental hygienists will clean your teeth. Each hygienist is here to help you and ensure you get a high-quality cleaning experience.
Dr. Martin will visit you for exams and discuss your X-rays and imaging. He will listen to your concerns and propose solutions if necessary.

This commonly used treatment is way more important than people give it credit for. It is the foundation for preventive care. During these cleanings and exams, we will remove plaque, tartar, and surface stains. These routine check-ups will maintain a clean and bright smile that allows for early detection and prevention of potential issues.
PATIENT-CENTRIC EXAMS
We prioritize comprehensive care beyond insurance constraints. Exams are completed based on individual needs because oral health is the primary focus. Using this personalized approach allows us to customize our services to your unique dental needs. With the help of innovative technology, we promote a more individualized and effective dental experience.
CARE FOR THOSE WITH DENTAL ANXIETY
We understand that those with dental anxiety or a high gag reflex may shy away from routine treatments. Our office has solutions for each patient, including laughing gas and oral sedation options. We also offer help for those with responsive gag reflexes.
Do not let your dental anxiety prevent you from getting cleanings and exams!
A Dental Cleaning Like No Other, With Airflow Technology
James Martin, DMD, offers cleanings that enhance your smile in many ways. Dental cleanings can remove small stains and plaque, making your teeth whiter and appear shinier. Our airflow technology allows us to clean you more comfortably while still removing plaque and buildup.
We pride ourselves on our detail-oriented care for cleanings and exams. You can expect us to be thorough yet quick with our dental cleanings.
We incorporate Airflow technology into our dental cleanings because it uses a combination of water, air, and fine powder to remove stubborn stains and biofilm. This ensures a thorough and gentle cleaning experience that enhances the effectiveness of our cleanings while prioritizing your comfort. With Airflow, you will no longer have to experience metal tools in your mouth during your cleaning, but will instead feel like you are getting a spa treatment for your teeth.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR EASIER TREATMENT
CARIFREE CTX LINE
These innovative products maintain a healthy pH balance in your mouth. This will prevent cavities from developing. Carifree products can also be used for minor gingivitis treatment as an antibacterial mouthwash. We use this as prevention to support your journey towards improved oral health.
CBCT SCANS
If you have any concerns about your bone density, facial nerves, or dental trauma, we offer CBCT scans. Cone Beam Computed Tomography scans are detailed 3D scans that allow Dr. Martin to evaluate your soft tissue, teeth, and gums for damage or concerns.
Common Questions About General Dentistry
Do dental cleanings hurt?
Our dental cleanings are comfortable experiences with little to no pain. Our Airflow dental cleaning technology should make them even more comfortable than regular cleanings. Each hygienist in our office is very careful to make this a comfortable experience.
How do dental cleanings prevent cavities?
Plaque and other biofilm build up on your teeth over time, and bacteria can feed on the plaque and produce acid. This acid eats away at your teeth and causes cavities. Not all plaque can be removed by your toothbrush and toothpaste at home. Dr. Martin and his team have special tools and technology that will remove the buildup that happens, effectively removing the cause of many cavities.
What is an oral cancer screening?
As part of our exams, we will check your mouth for oral cancer. We look for irregular patches or spots on your tongue and the surfaces of your mouth. It is as simple as that! If we notice any concerning areas, we will do a painless swab test to see if there are cancer cells in your saliva.
Should I still get cleanings if I have implants?
We have specialized cleaning approaches for those with implants or cosmetic and restorative work, but you should still come in to have your smile examined and to have your teeth cleaned and cared for.
