Understanding Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a blanket term for several different conditions, the most prominent of which is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). With any sleep apnea condition, your body will wake in the middle of the night to get air, as it stops breathing.
With obstructive sleep apnea specifically, your airway constricts, or caves in entirely, preventing your body from moving air to the lungs. Your body will start awake to open the airway.
If you are suffering from sleep apnea you may not even know, since most people do not remember or even realize they are waking up throughout the night.

Who Is At Risk For Sleep Apnea?
While anyone can be affected by sleep apnea, even children, some individuals are more prone to it than others. As you age, you become more likely to have sleep apnea; it is also prevalent in individuals who have heart conditions, smoke, use certain medications, or have more tissue around their throat or neck.
Regardless of if you are more likely to get sleep apnea or not, it can affect anyone so it is important to know how to combat it and get a good night of sleep for your physical and mental well-being.
Sleep Apnea Symptoms
Always be on the lookout for sleep apnea symptoms, especially if you are an individual who has pre-existing conditions that could contribute to sleep apnea.
Some sleep apnea symptoms include:
- Daytime grogginess
- A sudden increase in irritability
- Migraines, especially after waking up
- A weaker immune system
- Loud snoring or gasping
These symptoms can change your life for the worse, which is why prompt diagnosis and treatment are so essential. If you notice a decline in your sleep health, mental health, or a combination of the two, contact us to learn about your diagnosis and treatment options.
Diagnosing Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a doctor or sleep specialist. Dr. Martin and his team can do scans that you can show to your doctor to receive an official diagnosis, and then create a treatment plan to help you get your rest back.
Your doctor may do a sleep test, using a sleep ring or other monitoring device. These devices track your heart rate, oxygen levels, and general sleep patterns throughout the night. If your oxygen levels drop throughout the night, you likely are suffering from sleep apnea.
The Benefits of Sleep Apnea Treatment
Sleep apnea treatment can be revolutionary for your health. When you receive treatment from James Martin, DMD, you can experience:
- Improved mental health
- More restful sleep
- Reduced snoring and gasping
- Non-invasive options without a CPAP
Your airway health is linked with your overall health in many ways. Sleep apnea is linked to increased risk of:
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Chronic fatigue and migraines
- Alzheimer’s disease
When you visit James Martin, DMD, we will focus on improving your overall health, not just improving your oral health. By treating sleep apnea, we can do both.

Treatment Approaches
A New Style of OSA Therapy
Our premier sleep apnea treatment involves a specialized oral appliance. With an oral appliance, you do not need a CPAP machine. Instead, the oral appliance prevents your airway from collapsing as you sleep.
This therapy method is minimally invasive, portable, and quiet. You will not need to handle a bulky machine that keeps you up at night because it is loud.
We can even combine an oral appliance with a CPAP machine to do combined therapy for severe cases.
No Longer Use a CPAP
If you are using a CPAP, don’t think that is your only solution! On its own, an oral appliance is appropriate for mild to moderate sleep apnea. Our oral appliances are:
- Convenient
- Travel-sized
- Comfortable
- Quiet
- Customized
They fit in a small container that can come with you everywhere, so it doesn’t matter where you sleep. You can even take it camping.
Patient Education
While oral appliance therapy can be the solution for OSA a successful treatment plan often involves lifestyle changes that improve your health:
- Sleep Position Therapy: Sometimes moving to sleep on your side instead of your back can greatly reduce the amount of starts you experience throughout the night.
- Sinus Care: Poor sinus health can contribute to sleep apnea, so we may recommend treatments for sinus infections and making improvements to your sinus health.
- Diet and Weight Loss: Having excessive weight around the neck can contribute to sleep apnea, as can a diet high in sugar.
We will build a relationship with you and work with you to create a plan that is achievable and addresses your specific needs and symptoms. Our treatment plan will involve a sleep specialist and other medical professionals, to give you a well-rounded approach to receiving better sleep.

Creating a Team For You

Our sleep specialist will help you receive a sleep apnea diagnosis, and with them, we will ascertain if an oral appliance, a CPAP machine, or combined therapy is the best route for a better night’s rest.
Involving your family doctor allows us to create some lifestyle recommendations and understand any underlying issues that patients may be suffering from, such as diabetes or obesity.
Getting to Know You With a Specialized Consultation
We want to get to know you and your medical needs, which is why we have a unique approach to our initial consultation for sleep apnea. Our consultation is two hours long and covers your health history, your sleep apnea concerns, and your X-ray results.
During this consultation, we will also take the time to get to know you as a person. We want to develop a relationship with you that leaves you excited to come in for a visit.
Digital Technology for Better Sleep Apnea Results
We utilize the KOIS bite analyzer, an amazing digital tool that helps us understand your jaw. This tool allows us to determine if an occlusion is contributing to your sleep apnea.
Our digital technology also allows us to plan and create a custom mouthguard or oral appliance. These dental tools allow us to not only keep your airway open but also adjust your bite, preventing sleep apnea in the long run.
The Connection Between Your Bite and Your Sleep
A “bite” is how your jaws work together. Sometimes bites have occlusions, where teeth touch each other when they should not. You can also experience an overbite or underbite, where the bottom teeth are set too forward or too far back.
If you have a misaligned jaw, you are more likely to experience airway collapse as you sleep, since the jaw cannot support your airway properly. If a misalignment is contributing to your sleep apnea, Dr. James Martin will be able to recommend treatments such as a deprogrammer or mouth guard.
Sleep Apnea FAQs
Does My Family History Contribute to Sleep Apnea?
Family history can contribute to the likelihood that you will experience sleep apnea. Some families are predisposed to smaller airways, which can cause sleep apnea. If your family has a history of sleep apnea, it is good to be on the lookout for symptoms developing.
Other things that are linked to sleep apnea also run in families, such as obesity and diabetes.
Make sure to do some research on your family history and bring what you know to our specialized two-hour consultation.
Is Sleep Apnea Curable?
Sometimes, if sleep apnea is caused by a small airway, we work on curing the symptoms of sleep apnea, providing you with better rest.
Other times, having a misaligned jaw or sinus infection can cause sleep apnea, and curing those will cure the sleep apnea entirely. It depends on the case. No matter what the cause is, we will work with you and your health team to get you a better night’s rest.
Can Children Have Sleep Apnea?
Pediatric sleep apnea is less common. When it does happen, seeing a pediatric sleep doctor or pediatric dentist will help you and your child find the solutions you need.
Does Age Affect Sleep Apnea?
Those who are sixty-five or older experience sleep apnea in larger quantities than those younger than them. However, sleep apnea can affect any age, which is why you should always be on the lookout for sleep apnea symptoms occurring in your life.
