What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is an umbrella of dental treatments that straighten your teeth. There are many different ways to do so, and many can actually be completed by cosmetic and restorative dentists such as Dr. Martin.
Straightening your teeth with orthodontics often takes anywhere between 6 months and a couple of years, depending on the needs of your smile. It isn’t a single-visit process like veneers or whitening.
While many people think of orthodontics as traditional metal braces, Invisalign and other more discreet braces methods have become more reliable and popular in recent years. Orthodontics doesn’t need to add metal to your smile or be uncomfortable. We use Invisalign to straighten your teeth comfortably and discreetly.
How Orthodontics Works for Your Smile
Stabilizing Results for Long-Term Support
What makes orthodontics especially valuable is that the results are not just cosmetic—they are functional and lasting. Once teeth are aligned and the bite is stabilized, retainers help hold everything in place while the surrounding bone and tissues fully adapt. This ensures the improvements you achieve are designed to last, supporting your smile, comfort, and oral health for years to come.
Improving Bite Function and Oral Health
As teeth move into proper alignment, the bite begins to function the way it was designed to. Chewing becomes more efficient, pressure is distributed more evenly across the teeth, and excess strain on the jaw joints and muscles is reduced. Straighter teeth are also easier to keep clean, which supports long-term gum health and helps protect against decay and wear.

Why a Straighter Smile?
Orthodontic treatment is about far more than appearance alone. When teeth are properly aligned, your smile functions more efficiently, feels more comfortable, and supports your oral health for the long term. At James Martin, DMD, orthodontics is designed to create results that look natural, feel balanced, and last.
Oral Health
Straighter teeth are easier to care for. When teeth overlap, tilt, or sit too close together, plaque and bacteria can hide in areas that brushing and flossing struggle to reach. Orthodontic treatment helps create proper spacing and alignment, making daily hygiene more effective and reducing the risk of tooth damage.
Function
A balanced bite allows your teeth and jaw to work together the way they should. Misalignment can place excess pressure on certain teeth, contribute to jaw discomfort, and make chewing less efficient. Orthodontics helps distribute biting forces evenly, improving comfort while eating and speaking, and reducing unnecessary strain on the jaw joints and muscles. The result is a smile that not only looks better but works better, so you can enjoy your life without worrying about your smile.
Cosmetic Harmony
Orthodontic care creates visual balance by closing gaps, straightening crowded teeth, and aligning your smile with your facial features. Even subtle adjustments can make a meaningful difference in symmetry and proportion, giving your smile a smoother, more cohesive appearance. This foundation often enhances the results of future cosmetic dentistry, if desired, and allows your natural smile to shine without distraction.
Confidence
When your smile feels comfortable, healthy, and aligned, it shows. Patients often find that orthodontic treatment gives them the freedom to smile, speak, and laugh without hesitation. That confidence carries into everyday interactions, creating a sense of ease that comes from knowing your smile looks great and functions as it should.
Learn if Orthodontics is Right for You
Orthodontics is ideal for patients who are struggling with these issues:
- Jaw pain or TMJ issues
- Gaps in your teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Overlapping teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Poor confidence because of an uneven smile
Different kinds of orthodontics address different issues. Invisalign is often recommended for simple to moderate orthodontic cases.
To be a candidate for orthodontics, you will need good oral health, especially good gum health. If you don’t have those yet, we can work with you to improve your smile’s wellness before you get orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign for Discreet Orthodontics
If you are looking for an easy and invisible way to straighten your teeth, we have the solution for you. Invisalign uses clear aligners to straighten your teeth over a period of 6 months to 2 years. It is gentle, with no adjustments and fewer visits to our office than traditional orthodontics.
You wear the invisible aligners for around 22 hours each day, and take them out to clean them and eat, making this kind of orthodontic care very simple. Dr. Martin will give you guidance on when to switch out your aligners, which typically happens every 2 weeks.
